  • renovating the kitchen

My Recent Kitchen Renovation I guess this post will have to go under ‘crafts’ because renovation is not really something I specialize in (an obvious fact, if you’ve ever been to my house). Last November, a pipe broke in the wall in our kitchen and forced the process on us. It was a mess – I guess it had been leaking slowly inside our walls for a while before it finally broke through the basement ceiling. That meant there was mold and we had to leave the house while it was all sorted out. I am so glad we had insurance coverage. Kitchen ‘Before’ Photo Here’s a before shot of our kitchen (notice the mess, you will see that this is one thing that has not changed…) Side note: if you ever see not one, but TWO, of the biggest spiders you have ever seen crawling through your living room there is a possibility that they are running from something. I swear these 2 spiders showed up right around the same time as the leak. The leak was in the wall behind the kitchen cabinets – and they were destroyed during the repairs – so I got to pick out something new. Our house was built in 1946 and I am a fan of the styles (and the movies!) of that era, but I also wanted our kitchen cabinets and

The world’s creepiest craft? Here is my recently hacked-off pony tail with googly eyes. This hair removal took on the form of a celebration, with my friend Rosie there to witness my escape from this big frizzy monster that had been following me around for almost a decade. She then sat next to me at the salon, holding it on her lap like a little dog, petting it once in a while. It joined us for drinks afterwards and got a ride in my friend Leah’s sweet Ford Falcon. A few days later it grew some googly eyes and surprised two of my best friends in the whole world, Jodi and Kristine, when it joined them for drinks on our back porch. Good times. I’m not sure what to do with him now. Our physical bond has been severed, yet I still feel an attachment. My friend Jodi suggested I post it on eBay as a merkin, but I can’t get past the forlorn look in his eyes so I might have to install him into a shadow box and hang him above my craft table

  • making a birthday cake out of twinkies, ding dongs, and cupcakes, oh my!

I first saw one of these cakes when I was looking around for wedding cake ideas, it was at the official hostess cakes website. I decided on a more traditional wedding cake for our wedding but always wanted to make a cake like this of my own. More recently, I came across a cake made out of various Hostess brand goodies on the fatgirltrappedinaskinnybody.blogspot.com site- hers is much classier looking than my example below, which is the trashiest (I think the digital candle holders really top it off- they were flashing with his age at the party!). My friend Keith’s birthday presented me with the perfect opportunity. He is the cake expert in our group, and has made some really special cakes for our birthdays over the years. Everything from a pair of rollerskates (my favorite), to David Bowie’s face, a Simpsons cake, and a guitar…. I am not that talented but this cake was still a hit. An added benefit, you don’t need cutlery or plates to eat this cake so it’s great to bring to a public place or you could even take the ingredients camping and assemble it when you get there (I used drinking straws instead of wooden skewers so no one would hurt themselves after a few drinks.) PS Wrong watermark on photo – it’s mine and belongs to this site (sometimes Mama Brain is really
