Vancouver Specials A gingerbread house kit for building a Vancouver Special (it’s a type of house common here): Source: bcbusinessonline.ca via Tanya on Pinterest I love these houses- people make fun of them, and some people even think they are ugly- but they are special to me. Driving through town, my kids and I play a game where we try to find the longest row of Vancouver Specials built next to each other. I think our record is six so far… Source: vancouverisawesome.com via Bonnie on Pinterest In the meantime, developers are tearing down old bungalows and postwar homes and replacing them with giant stucco monstrosities – often peach or brown, and always hideous. There should be a limit to how many similar houses you can put on one street – it should be part of the building permit application… …unless it is the blueprint for a Vancouver special, of course -

    Books read in 2012

So 2012 is coming to an end and I’ve been collecting the books that I’ve read on Pinterest. It’s interesting to look back on the year this way – it felt like I read more actually but I guess I’ve been busy. Click on the image below to visit my books board – I guess there will be at least 1 or 2 more there by the end of December… My favorite book was In a Lonely Place – partially because I was so excited to find out the movie was based on a book. I don’t know how I managed to be such a big Bogart, film noir, and detective story fan and not know that – but it happens. The book I talked about the most was Keith Richards’ biography. I still have a backlog of Stones’ songs and his solo albums to listen to now that I have his stories bouncing around in my head

I’m one of those people who prefers the salad toppings to the actual salad. Here is a healthy way to get around this problem. I’m not sure that the picture looks very appetizing, but I think it’s pretty tasty.     Fast version of this recipe included in (brackets). 3 tomatoes cut into wedges 1 avocado 1/2 cup fresh salsa (or store-bought fresh salsa – the kind that is refrigerated) Optional toppings: Fresh corn Fresh chopped cilantro Beans (black beans, chickpeas, etc) Serve with: Bed of lettuce Nacho chips Grilled fish or chicken

i should be napping but instead you can find me on:
