Art Bergmann played a sold out show at Richards on Richards in Vancouver BC Thursday March 26. Bergmann is unable to play guitar while he recovers from back surgery but still managed to be a menace on stage. He provided the surly and volatile stage presence fans have come to expect. I think anyone expecting a tamer, gentler Art Bergmann was in for a pleasant surprise - I had forgotten how tense one of his shows could be… Bergmann threw insults at his band mates (made a gun gesture and shot his drummer and yelled ‘You’re horrible’ out, presumably to all of them). Of course, I didn’t feel sorry for them- they all looked like they could take care of themselves; particularly Tony Walker (aka Tony Baloney). Bergmann also had an ongoing war with an uncooperative microphone stand (he won). The atmosphere got downright uncomfortable when the sound tech had what can only be described as a meltdown after being literally dragged across the stage by the sound man. In contrast, Bergmann was friendly to the audience – he only threw a lime wedge at us (and, perhaps, the accompanying shot glass – I didn’t have my glasses on) and he even pointed out his nephew in the crowd. I am so glad I was able to be there for this show, it was exhilarating – rumored to be his
75% of my readers are from the US and Europe so I think it’s safe to assume that you probably haven’t heard of Art Bergmann. I’ve seen Art Bergmann perform a zillion times over the years and he has taken a place among Lou Reed, Paul Westerberg, Dean Wareham, and Elvis Costello as one of my favorite male songwriters, musicians, and performers of all time (there are others, but I’ve restricted my list to artists I’ve seen perform live). Toro magazine describes Bergmann as “a truly kick-ass underachiever – one of the least successful, most unrecognized Canadian icons ever” (click here to read full article). “A Never Was Trying To Be A Has Been” (song – Bound For Vegas, album – Sexual Roulette, 1990) The first time I saw Art Bergmann play it was the early 90′s and I had won tickets to a show he shared with a bunch of Canadian bands: Bootsauce, Sons of Freedom, and Pure. I think it was the last show in the tour, and Bergmann appeared on stage alone with his guitar for his set. In between songs, he complained that the bands would not let him on their tour buses and that he had to chase them across the country by Greyhound bus. He even had to hitchhike to one of the shows when he missed a connection. Just like every story there
Recently I compared my Favorite Web Personality #15: Pascal-Auban Scher to musician Daniel Johnston – which led me to discover Johnston’s website, hihowareyou.com, for the first time. Truthfully, while a fan of Johnston’s, I hadn’t listened to him in a long time and stumbling upon him again was like bumping into an old friend. If you like The Dead Milkmen, The Magnetic Fields, Bob Dylan, or Syd Barrett – I think you’ll like Daniel Johnston… Tip: Play This Video While You Are Reading this Post for the Perfect Soundtrack!
