75% of my readers are from the US and Europe so I think it’s safe to assume that you probably haven’t heard of Art Bergmann. I’ve seen Art Bergmann perform a zillion times over the years and he has taken a place among Lou Reed, Paul Westerberg, Dean Wareham, and Elvis Costello as one of my favorite male songwriters, musicians, and performers of all time (there are others, but I’ve restricted my list to artists I’ve seen perform live). Toro magazine describes Bergmann as “a truly kick-ass underachiever – one of the least successful, most unrecognized Canadian icons ever” (click here to read full article). “A Never Was Trying To Be A Has Been” (song – Bound For Vegas, album – Sexual Roulette, 1990) The first time I saw Art Bergmann play it was the early 90′s and I had won tickets to a show he shared with a bunch of Canadian bands: Bootsauce, Sons of Freedom, and Pure. I think it was the last show in the tour, and Bergmann appeared on stage alone with his guitar for his set. In between songs, he complained that the bands would not let him on their tour buses and that he had to chase them across the country by Greyhound bus. He even had to hitchhike to one of the shows when he missed a connection. Just like every story there
The first of regular monthly featured Artists. Here is my first ‘artist of the month’ selection and, already, I am breaking one of the guidelines. On Friday, January 30th I went to the “13 Most Beautiful… Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests”. Some time ago, I had heard that 13 of Andy Warhol’s screen tests were going to be shown at the Warhol museum and that Dean & Britta were composing a soundtrack for the show. I considered traveling to Pittsburgh for the show. I first became a fan of Andy Warhol in high school, when I discovered his biography in our school library. Dean and Britta used to be in a band called Luna, one of top 5 favorite bands. I discovred Luna through a roommate who said they had been compared to the Velvet Underground (also in my top 5). I’ve seen Luna perform several (four or five?) times over more than a decade. The first night I saw them play, I was performing on stage with a band for the very first time – when our set was over, I ran down the road to go see them play. We had all bought tickets to Luna so most of my friends missed my first show (they didn’t miss much, I played most of the set with my back to the audience). When I found out that
Coming Soon… ishouldbenapping will be featuring a new artist each week! By new, I mean new to me of course. The term ‘artist’ will include: individuals or groups of people making music of all types. I will provide links to the musician’s website(s), online stores, and include photos and video (if available) Note added Feb 2, 2009 – This has changed to ‘Featured Artist of the Month’ for now – too many naps, too little time!
