The second installment in my weekly selection of the favorite web people I come across during my work week…
I’d like to mention here that these are not in any particular order…
#2 Mike Watt
Platform(s): myspace and personal website
Who he/she is:
He’s one of the best bass players ever. He used to play in the Minutemen and Firehose. He tours with the Stooges. He’s toured with Jay Mascis and the Fog. All reasons to have a big crush on him, be inspired by him, whatever… I’m a bit of both- he is an amazing finger player (rather than using a pick) and that’s how I always play so he’s in my favorites for that just alone.
He’s also nice in person - I talked to him after a Jay Mascis and the Fog show once and he was very friendly and patient, and I’m pretty sure I was being a bit obnoxious (sorry Mike Watt).
Best Quote from site:
“the man in the van w/a bass in his hand”
5 reasons why I chose him:
As if my description above isn’t enough, the actual reason he’s being picked as a favorite web personality is because of two sites: his myspace site and his hootpage site. He personally keeps them up to date on a consistent basis which is pretty cool since he’s a living legend (reason #1) and he’s an interesting guy so it’s an interesting read (reason #2). Make sure you read the quotes he uses in the ‘interests’ section, they are great…
3 More Reasons:
3. He’s one of the best bass players ever (did I already mention that?). In fact, he just won a lifetime achievement award for his bass playing about 3 days ago (or, ‘working the thudstaff’ as he calls it).
4. It’s not all about him. Some sites are all ‘look at me, look at me’ which would be okay because the reason why most people are looking at a particular person’s site is because they are interested in that person. Yet, Mike includes cartoons, songs by other musicians, quotes, things like that. And, his profile playlist is great- right now I’ve just got his page up on my other screen and I’m listening to it as I type.
5. He kept a diary of his tour with Iggy and the Stooges and posted it.
