Okay first just a reminder this list is not in any particular order-
…it’s more of a ‘favorite web personality of the week’. Although, I have to admit, I already have next week’s picked out - I just didn’t want to select musicians two weeks in a row.
Let me begin by explaining that I am pretty new to blogging, social network sites and such. Privately, I facebook and my band has a site on myspace but I only started blogging this summer. My husband used reddit but I didn’t really pay much attention.
I discovered Digg when someone else (thanks Shell!) submitted one of my posts and it got some action. Since then I have had an on-again, off-again relationship with Digg. I find that once I start digging, I just can’t stop. Hours pass by and I still don’t have my online portfolio up, I still have two writing jobs to finish and I’m not practicing my bass even though I have a gig in 3 days. Thanks Digg!
Digg is a lot more fun now that the election is over, I was getting a bit bored (I am Canadian, after all - I’m sure diggers south of the border had a longer attention span).
I think I might be submitting too many articles (is there an etiquette? I have no idea) but I can’t help it - when I have something I think is interesting I send it in. I’m a member of reddit, too, but digg is so much easier to use.
It does seem like there are a lot of networks of people who are messaging (or ’shouting’) to each other to digg their story in exchange for reciprocal digging, which to me defeats the purpose… but I guess if they have common interests it makes sense. I’ve mostly only received shouts that are poorly disguised advertising so I’ve deleted them.
In a quest to get my submissions a few more diggs I decided to try adding some more friends so that I might also have a network of like-minded people. The cool thing is that Digg shows you other users who liked the same articles as you. I check their profiles out and then, when I’m feeling cheeky, I add them as a friend.
Anyways, during my digging and shy friend gathering, I’ve also come across some interesting Diggers. Here is one in particular:
#3 IvanB (user name “Final Exams, Please Don’t Delete Me”)
Platform(s): Digg
Who he/she is:
According to his profile he’s a “guy who joined Digg on March 27th, 2006″. He’s obviously in school, going by his user name.
Best Quote from site:
Um, his user name obviously.
5 reasons why I chose him:
1. This digger is a perfect example of what Digg can do to you! I can totally relate.
2. He warns everyone that he is in final exams (so not to delete him if he’s not as active as expected). But, when you look at his history he dugg stuff 6 min ago (yes, while I was writing the above), 36 minutes ago, 1 hour ago (two things), 2 hours and 14 minutes ago, and so on.
3. In fact if I look at his history he’s been digging things at least once an hour all day long.
4. In the two and a half years he’s been active, he has dugg 53,636 items and left 1,921 comments. I, on the other hand have dugg 93 items, left 7 comments, and I have a 0% success rate with my 21 submissions. Ouch. As a newbie to these kinds of sites I’m pretty sure there is a lesson to be learned here, I might just be too sleep-deprived to figure it out.
5. 44% of his 1,201 submissions have been popular which is pretty amazing in the world of Digg as far as I can tell. And I can see why, they are generally very interesting - but then I would think so, I found him because he showed up on my list of people with similar interests…

Oh, and IvanB, if you have somehow ended up at this site: don’t fret, I’m not stalking you - next week I will be writing about some other hapless victim I digg - although next time I will stumble upon them at a different site… perhaps this blog post will get your diggs some more popularity (not that you need it) but best wishes, anyways!
